Our Farm
We are a family farm raising sheep for fibre and meat. We also operate a wool pellet mill, sourcing raw wool from local farms to create a premium soil amendment.
We started off with a small flock of Icelandics. They are a triple purpose breed with a rich history, providing beautiful fleece, rich milk and tender, flavourful meat.
Over time, we added more sheep to our flock including several Blue Faced Leicester ewes. These were chosen for their lustrous fleece, good mothering instincts and their unique faces. These BFL ewes were covered last fall by our Icelandic ram, and their lambs born this spring were our favorites. They have been maturing nicely, having a slightly longer carcass than the pure Icelandics and amazing silky fleeces. We will be retaining a few special crosses to build our flock. After shearing we realized that not all of their wool could be utilized for fibre arts.
This led us to starting our own wool pellet mill so that we could serve our community and sheep farmers throughout BC by processing their waste wool into usable wool pellets.
Why wool pellet processing?
There are 300 sheep farms in the Fraser Valley, and an abundance of waste wool in our local fibreshed. Wool that is not utilized or suitable for textiles is typically thrown away or burned. After using our mediocre fleeces in the garden with great results, we came across the opportunity to purchase a wool pellet mill. While this provides gardeners and the horticulture industry with a premium soil amendment, it also gives farmers an opportunity to utilize their waste wool.
Our wool is locally sourced within British Columbia, reducing our carbon footprint associated with transportation. We purchase wool at above market value and turn it into pellets to use as a natural and renewable fertilizer for your garden. The local farmer is able to utilize more from their sheep, which creates less waste and more local economic opportunity.
